UCBEA Honors Distinguished Emeritus of the Year 2016-17

At a reception in his honor on November 3rd, Professor Emeritus David Wake was awarded the 2016-17 Distinguished Emeritus of the year by UCBEA president, Sheldon Zedeck. David Wake, professor emeritus of integrative biology and former Director and curator of herpetology at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, spoke about his extensive research and the people who have, and continue to inspire his work. This award is selected by a UCBEA committee and focuses on the accomplishments and contributions of a retired faculty member since retiring. An Invitation to Emeriti 
to become engaged in ongoing research
The Interdisciplinary Center for Healthy Workplaces (ICHW) is a campus-sponsored center, is looking to build its interdisciplinary team of researchers by reaching out to Emeriti who may be interested in participating in ICHW’s activities and mission. Examples of projects in which Emeriti may be interested inlcude:
  • Healthy Universities. ICHW is engaged in a year-long investigation of the factors within the UC Berkeley environment and organizational processes that contribute to faculty and staff health and well-being.
  • Design Principles Based on Human Need Satisfaction. ICHW is engaged in exploring workplace design “drivers” of need satisfaction based on a Healthy Workplaces Model.

Professor Emeritus Robert Blauner, prescient sociologist, advocate, dies at 87

Robert Blauner, a professor emeritus in the sociology department noted for his prescient studies on race relations, died in his North Berkeley home Oct. 20 at the age of 87.
Blauner was credited by former colleagues for producing work that influenced both the academic and public spheres and for taking strong moral stances. He was an early advocate against sexual harassment and for affirmative action.
