Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) Director Search 2018
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Center for Studies in Higher Education is seeking a new faculty Director effective no later than July 1, 2019. We invite nominations of tenured Berkeley faculty members (who may be emeritus) -- who are highly qualified and willing to serve as a leader in both research and administrative functions for the Center. We will also consider those with academic appointments outside UC Berkeley although we have limited resources for support. The candidate should have a well-established research and professional reputation as well as leadership and administrative abilities. This appointment is for an initial three year term and provides significant compensation that could be used for course buy-outs, a stipend, and/or summer salary.
Established in 1957, the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) is the first research institute in the United States devoted to the study of higher education. The Center’s mission is to produce and support multi-disciplinary scholarly perspectives on strategic issues in higher education, conduct policy relevant research, promote the development of a community of scholars and policymakers engaged in policy oriented discussion, and continue the Center’s public service role as a resource on higher education. CSHE brings to this discussion several distinct perspectives:
- A national and international and comparative focus
- A focus on higher education policy issues unique to California and its different tiers of education
- A focus on the specific strategic issues important to the University of California
Center activities include research projects, seminars and conferences, and a visiting scholars program. The Center publications include the Research and Occasional Papers Series (ROPS), Center reports, and articles and books by CSHE affiliated researchers. The Center is the home of a number of special programs, including the Student Experience in the Research University Consortium , the Gardner Seminar for graduate students writing dissertations on higher education, the Clark Kerr Lectures on the Role of Higher Education in Society, and the CSHE Executive Leadership Academy. The Center is part of the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the Director will report to the Dean of the School.
The Director should also have a distinguished record of scholarship and published work related to higher education and/or substantial experience in higher education administration, the leadership qualities to provide outward looking vision, foster innovative interdisciplinary research among faculty and students, promote outreach to policy making constituencies, sustain and expand financial resources, demonstrate a commitment to support Berkeley’s Principles of Community and manage a talented professional staff.
Please submit nominations by completing the online nomination form as soon as possible but no later than October 22, 2018. Self-nominations are welcome. The appointed search advisory committee will review those who apply or who are nominated, but it will not be provided with the names of those who submit nominations of others or know whether individuals have been self-nominated. All nominations will be reviewed by the search advisory committee that will select the top 3-5 nominees to solicit interest in becoming a formal candidate, and through the interview process, recommend 2-3 candidates to the Dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy.
