UCRAB Scholarship

For a number of years UCRAB members have purchased tickets to come out and enjoy our annual Day at the Races with the understanding that a portion of the ticket price would be set aside to fund scholarships. In summer of 2014, UCRAB was delighted to announce that plans were in the making to present its first scholarship.

In spring 2015, UCRAB joined with the UC Oakland Partnership to award six scholarships to Oakland high school graduates who will be attending a UC campus in the fall. With the help of a generous donation from UCRAB, two future UC Berkeley students and future Merced, San Diego, UCLA, and Santa Cruz students will each receive a one-year scholarship to help cover expenses such as tuition, housing, books and cost of living. All of these students demonstrated unparalleled service to their communities, each serving more than 600 hours of community service during high school, and many overcame significant challenges to attain admission to a UC campus. In the photo above, UCRAB Past President Iola James (second from left), UCOP President Janet Napalitano (center) and UCRAB Scholarship Committee Chair Patricia Hardy (second from right) present scholarships to the 2015 scholarship winners.

Patricia Hardy recently met with Brendan O'Callaghan of President Napolitano's staff to present a check for $500 in support of the UC-Oakland Partnership Fund.

Children's Hospital Donations

For over a decade UCRAB members have made donations of toys, art supplies, books, and other needed items for the benefit of patients at Children’s Hospital, Oakland during our annual holiday party. The simple and effective program encourages party guests to bring their unwrapped, new gift items to the festive event. UCRAB board members then deliver the gifts directly to the hospital Foundation. On right, Iola James, Kurt Lauridsen and Isabelle Revoir display some of the many items collected at the 2014 UCRAB Holiday Party.

You may visit the Children's Hospital website to see a listing of what items are always needed and what is not accepted at: http://childrenshospitaloakland.org/main/in-kind-donation.aspx

A hospital visit is often scary for a child, and Children's Hospital does its best to help patients and families feel as welcome and comfortable as they would be at home. Donated new toys, books, stuffed animals, craft materials, and other items help comfort and entertain children during their hospital experience. UCRAB is proud to be able to assist Children's Hospital in their mission.
