Pre-Retirement Planning Seminars

Planning to retire from full time work? Are you ready?

The Retirement Center coordinates a variety of pre-retirement and long-term care planning seminars to help you prepare for the important transition of retirement.  Find below the seminars scheduled for the upcoming semester, including  "Pathway to Retirement" covering the nuts-and-bolts of retirement and seminars like "Planning for Life in Retirement" and special seminars for faculty which touch on issues of work-life and academic transitions, issues of transitions in family life and new or part-time employment.

Description: The Retirement Center is partnering with UC Office of the President to host the Pathway to Retirement Event to guide employees in planning for financial security in retirement. Featured speakers include a retirement counselor from the UC Retirement Administration Service Center who will explain your UC retirement benefits and eligibility rules for retiree health, describe the steps you need to take when you’re ready to retire and answer your questions. Spouses and partners are encouraged to attend. There is no hard-and-fast rule on when an employee should take this seminar, most participants are 1-5 years from their retirement date.

LBNL Life in Retirement Panel in partnership with LBNL ERGs

Description: Life in retirement can take some adjustment. During the time immediately following retirement, retirees vary greatly on how they feel. And changes caused by the pandemic may make life in retirement look different than you planned, at least temporarily. It’s important to take some steps to ease the transition.

Join the Berkeley Retirement Center and the LBNL Employee Resource Groups, IDEA, and the LBNL Health Care Facilitator for a "Life in Retirement'' Retiree Panel conversation. Retiree panelists will discuss things like: what aspect of retirement living surprised them; what were some of the actions/ things they did in advance of retirement; were there things they would have done differently in preparing for or related to retirement.

Faculty Thriving in Retirement Panel

Description:   Facilitated by Professors Emeritus/a Phil Cowan, Carolyn Cowan, and Sheldon Zedeck, all members of the Department of Psychology, this session is designed for faculty who are contemplating all of the opportunities that retirement may offer. As part of the first panel, three emeriti will share their experiences with transitioning from active to retired faculty. As part of the second panel, two emeriti, joined by their partners, will talk about how they experienced the transition as a family.

Retirement Planning Pop-up Event

Description: 

This Retirement Pop-Up is intended to provide high-level support and information to members of the UC Berkeley and LBNL communities that plan to retire on July 1, 2023 or sooner.

Speakers at this event will not include representatives from RASC, which may limit their ability to answer individual retirement questions.

However, panelists will be happy to provide whatever support they can to individual needs as long as time permits and private, confidential information is not shared. Being logged into your UCRAYS account and Fidelity NetBenefits account will be helpful when attending.

Information on the basic retirement process, as well as an opportunity to answer Frequently Asked Questions, will be covered during this session.
