About the Peace Corps
The Peace Corps(link is external) traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then-Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.
Since that time, 220,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 140 host countries to work on issues ranging from education to health outreach and environmental preservation.
More than 7% of Peace Corps volunteers are older than 55; the oldest currently serving volunteer is 87. Volunteers work in Education, Health, Environment, Economic Development, Agriculture and Youth Development, ranging from six months (Response Program) to 27 months (traditional program). Peace Corps currently serves in more than 60 countries around the world; the most recent addition is Viet Nam.
