May 6, 9-10:15 am, Discussion with Dean Diana Wu, Covid-19 and the Media: The Role of Journalism in a Global Pandemic

In an era of fake news and social media influencers, the public has struggled with changing and conflicting information throughout the unraveling of the COVID-19 outbreak. While scientists often simply don’t know the answers that the public and policy makers are looking for, journalists struggle with the extreme reactions to their reporting, ranging from total denial to complete hysteria. In this unique panel discussion between two global thought-leaders in Public Health and Journalism, we explore the challenges of reporters and researchers to provide accurate information on a little known virus and a pandemic of historic proportions. This insider look behind the scenes will shed light on the collaborative efforts of scientists and journalists to support policy makers and the public in navigating the crisis. Our objective is to challenge your understanding of the crisis, to make you question your sources and to provoke your imagination of what the return to normalcy might look like.

Online panel Professor John Swartzberg and Dean Edward Wasserman, along with a welcome speech by Diana Wu, Dean of UC Berkeley Extension.
