“Building in the Bay Area: The Viewpoint of an African-American Real Estate Developer”  with Alan Dones

The speaker at our March luncheon is Alan Dones, a licensed general construction contractor and real estate developer. Mr. Dones will share his experiences growing up as the son of a trail-blazing African-American businessman who has been called “the Martin Luther King of the construction industry.” He will also talk about his personal experience as an African-American man building a business in the construction industry and in real estate development.

In 1988, Mr. Dones co-founded Rondeau Bay Construction, an engineering and construction firm based in Oakland. Expanding his vision in 2001, he co-founded Strategic Urban Development Alliance and serves as its Managing Partner. SUDA specializes in large-scale public agency projects and mixed-use developments (which combine business and residential space) and it provides engineering, construction, real estate, and financial services under one roof.

Mr. Dones’ career as a licensed contractor and developer can be traced directly to his father, Raymond Dones, Sr., who learned the electrical and plumbing trades while working as a Pullman car porter in Denver. After receiving his electrical contractor license, Mr. Dones, Sr. established Dones Electric in Oakland. In 1968, he co-founded Transbay Engineering and Builders and served as its C.E.O. for two decades. During this time, Transbay was consistently ranked in the top 100 Black-owned businesses in the United States by Black Enterprise Magazine and had a hand in building or subcontracting a number of major projects in Oakland and the Bay Area.

We hope you will join us for a good lunch, camaraderie, and an interesting presentation.
