Scheiber Emeriti Faculty Research Fund Award

Academic Senate Committee on Research (COR) Announces Recipients of Inaugural Scheiber Emeriti Faculty Research Fund Award 2019-20
150th Anniversary of Women at UC Berkeley

In the first year of awarding grants funded by the Scheiber Emeriti Faculty Research Fund, the Committee on Research (COR) is pleased to announce that it has awarded research grants to three Berkeley emeriti for projects related to this year's commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of Women at UC Berkeley.

These emeriti have received grants:

  • Catherine Gallagher (English): Comparative Study of Women's Research in the Humanities and Interpretive Social Sciences, 1970-1990
  • Zinmay Renee Sung (Plant & Microbial Biology): History of Asian American Women at UC Berkeley
  • Sheldon Zedeck (Psychology): UCBEA Legacy Project Interviews of UCB Emeritae

The Scheiber Emeriti Faculty Research Fund was initially endowed by Harry and Jane Scheiber in the mid-1990's. Harry Scheiber, Chancellor’s Emeritus Professor of Law, served on Academic Senate committees for forty-five consecutive years and was Chair of the Committee on Research in 1991-92 and Berkeley Division Chair in 1994-95.

The new Scheiber Fund Emeriti Research award is intended to encourage research by emeriti active at UC Berkeley on topics of current interest to the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate. The topic for 2019-20 was the 150th anniversary of the UC Regents’ unanimous approval of a resolution to admit women to UC Berkeley.

The first women were admitted to the university in 1872, and the first woman graduate received her degree in 1874. Since that time, hundreds of thousands of women have graduated from UC Berkeley, and thousands of staff, faculty, and friends of the campus have made immeasurable contributions to our campus and beyond. The campus is sponsoring a series of events, including a campus-wide history project, in celebration of 150 years of women at UC Berkeley.

The topic for the 2020-21 Scheiber Emeriti Faculty Research Fund grants will be announced in fall 2020 on the Senate's website a
