UC Berkeley Retirement Center and Belmont Village Albany Affiliation

Belmont Village Albany was conceived and designed in affiliation with the university as a retirement community for faculty and staff, as well as the residents of the adjoining cities of Berkeley and Albany. Belmont Village Albany is the product of a broad collaboration with university retirees and the UC Berkeley Retirement Center city, civic, and advocacy groups over a period of six years. The community is also built to LEED Gold standards using environmentally-friendly materials and systems throughout. Sustainable features include solar power capacity, the use of low-emitting materials, high efficiency plumbing and light fixtures, and drought tolerant landscaping.

The Retirement Center partners with Belmont Village to provide opportunities to enhance the experience of residents and surrounding communities through innovative programming and robust connections with the UCB campus.  The partnership offers opportunities for internships, and volunteer opportunities for students and retirees.  The library includes a Cal quilt designed by retiree Patti Owen and just outside the library is a UC Berkeley 150 year timeline of history. The large Town Hall space holds 100 people for learning and other activities.

What to Listen for in Jazz

Christy Dana

Christy Dana, Senior Lecturer Emerita, UC Berkeley.

Ever wonder what’s happening onstage in a jazz performance? How much is improvised? Are there structures that give shape to the improvisations? What does the music look like (if there is any) as compared to other written scores? How is the order of events in a piece decided upon? You may find that decoding this language by engaging with formal structures makes your listening more enjoyable. Even if you’ve never liked jazz, here’s your opportunity to understand it and enjoy it more!
