In her talk, Hochschild will recap a journey from her own blue bubble in Berkeley, California to the red bubble of Lake Charles, Louisiana, a center for oil jobs, Tea Party activism and great enthusiasm for Donald Trump. Her purpose was to cross an “empathy wall” and understand a right wing world view. She will talk about cultural barriers to trying to do this, difficulties in doing it, and the importance of finding elements of common ground.
Hochschild, a retired UC Berkeley sociologist, is the author of Strangers in Their Own Land: anger and mourning on the American right, a New York Times best seller and finalist for the National Book Award. A PBS NewsHour special by Paul Solman (on the PBS website) followed Hochschild to Louisiana to re-interview some of her subjects. She’s written ten books and her work is available in 17 languages.
