Emeritus of the Year 2023

Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Sheldon Zedeck, retired in 2011, and since then he, like previous
awardees, has been tireless in his efforts.

On behalf of Retirees, he has been President of UCBEA; he developed, fundraised and
participates in our Legacy Project for oral histories of retired faculty (twelve so far online and
more in the works); he worked with Phil and Carolyn Cowan to develop and implement a
psychosocial component to retirement planning in his Couples' Project; he was one of the
founding drivers of the Emeriti Academy (and he serves on its Board); he serves on the Berkeley
Working Group on Health that closely monitors activity at UCOP that impacts retiree benefits in
the health arena (this Working Group has catalyzed action on the part of UCOP in a positive way
for Retirees); he also continues to serve on the Board of UCBEA as a Past President. In
recognition of all these activities, in 2021, he won the inaugural 2021 AROHE HERO Distinguished
Service Award from the international Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher
Education.

Also, since his retirement he has done significant work in evaluating both the education and
performance of law professionals, and has published and presented on the impacts of high-
stakes testing for admissions to law schools. His presentations are both domestic and
international since retirement, documenting his continuing eminence in these fields even in
retirement.

Shelly is an exemplar who may help others transitioning into “retirement” realize that the
transition is simply a move into another busy chapter of life both within and outside the
academy.
