Anthem Blue Cross and Express Scripts

January 12, 2018

The following pertains only to those of who have health insurance through Anthem Blue cross (If you have UC Care, UC Health Savings Plan, Core, Medicare PPO, or High Option Supplement to Medicare, there is no need to continue reading).

On January 1, Express Scripts replaced Optum Rx as our medical prescription provider.  Following is helpful information and contact numbers if you have Express Scripts questions or refill issues:

  • Call the Anthem Blue Cross Rx phone number, as they are the administrator for UC’s contract with Express Scripts. Their number is 833-619-5708.  This number will not get you any specific information on Express Scripts, but can give you details about what is covered, costs, etc.
  • To call express scripts the phone number is 888-565-8361.  When you call this number, you will need to speak with a customer service agent.  As of January 6th, your prescriptions should have been transferred from Optum Rx to Express Scripts.
  • You need to set up an account with Express Scripts, either on line or by calling. If you leave a phone number with the agent, when you call in the future using that phone, you will be recognized and only will need to provide your birth date rather than severe layers of information. Also, when you set up your account, you can request that your current prescription be automatically sent out (you will need to leave a credit card online) or you can ask to be contacted (text, email or voice) to authorize the prescription.

If you continue to have problems, you can contact Gabe Schmidt (510) 664-4134 (his direct phone line) or the Retirement Administration Service Center at 1-800-888-8267.  Here’s the website for UC’s Health Facilitator: http://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/contacts/health-care-facilitators.html.
